Clinical context

Why blood typing matters

Determining a cat's blood type is an important part of veterinary transfusion medicine. Feline blood typing helps veterinary teams identify the blood group of donors and recipients and supports informed transfusion planning.

Cats have a naturally occurring alloantibody system. Cats with blood type B have strong naturally occurring anti-A antibodies, and cats with blood type A may have weak anti-B antibodies. Blood typing feline donors and recipients supports informed transfusion planning.

Feline A+B blood typing

  • Determines feline A and B blood groups
  • Can be used when blood typing feline donors and recipients
  • Supports compatibility assessment and transfusion planning
  • Designed for veterinary clinical use

Blood typing and crossmatching provide different information and may both form part of transfusion compatibility assessment.

Technology

How Alvedia feline blood typing technology works

QuickTest and LabTest use the same underlying technology. LabTest is the bulk-packaging version of the same test.

Membrane migration technology

The Alvedia system is based on the migration of red blood cells on a membrane. Monoclonal antibodies specific to feline blood group antigens are incorporated on the membrane. The resulting test pattern allows feline A and B blood groups to be identified.

Result interpretation

Results and challenging clinical samples

Most samples produce clear, unambiguous results. Some clinical situations may require additional consideration when interpreting feline blood typing results.

Type A result

A positive result for the A antigen is indicated on the membrane. The control line (C) must be positive, confirming the test has run successfully.

Type B result

A positive result for the B antigen is indicated on the membrane. The control line (C) must be positive, confirming the test has run successfully.

Need help interpreting a result?

Some clinical samples may require additional consideration. Contact Australian Animal Blood Bank for technical support or request the current Alvedia product guidance.
